material study: trying to gather actual materials to represent each level of the house

1 stained concrete

3 earth (to represent being underground)

 I then did the same but in a more detailed way by using textures / photos of the actual material used and translated that into the plan

in doing this, i started to see the combination of materials and the contrasts of the rough and refined materials used

rem uses mixed material and works in

using cheap with expensive and rough with refined materials together

the relationship of these materials create a sensuality with the textures and plays a more important role in the house than what most think.

the use of rough and refined materials reflects the rhythm seen in the house

I decided to look into further detail the structure of the house.  The structure is what creates that

f l o a t i n g  b o x

how the structure is made is very strategic in creating that

 l a u n c h 

by creating illusions through

1 the offsetting of columns seen in the L beam and the cable in tension

2 creating one a support from below and a support from above

through the making of the model, I found out that every structural element is key to the whole structure. they are completely 

i n t e r d e p e n d e n t 

on each other and without one, the whole thing would completely collapse.

I looked into closer what that structure propose on the life in the house.

it determines the quality of the space, and becomes the form that houses the internal spaces

it is very apparent in each level how the program / or how one would go about the house is controlled by the structure itself.

in the middle level it becomes complex, the column and the beam allow an uncertainty and complete freedom in program.

I chose this part because I wanted to show how it is a 

h o r i z o n t a l   h o u s e  w i t h  a  v e r t i c a l  o r g a n i z a t i o n

According to Rem, creating & designing a house is like creating a plot for a movie where in you have to create that 

s u s p e n s e 

with this particular part of the house, you can see that breaks are built in, and the suspense is created through the narrowing and widening of spaces achieved only by the elevator and the other stairs. 

It clearly shows the 3 different levels and how each of them becomes a 'set stage' for the different programs.

3  the controlled concrete box

but the elevator creates an ever changing program between the 3 levels with it, there are the many

p o s s i b l e  p r o g r a m s 

the elevator becomes another 'set stage' of its own.

I chose to study this house further because I was so curious about it. It has an eeriness to it and seems mysterious. Almost like the house hides and keeps secrets.
